In a significant move, Liberty Media, the owners of Formula One (F1), have officially announced the acquisition of MotoGP for €4.2 billion.

The acquisition, set to finalize by the end of 2024 pending regulatory approvals, marks the merging of the world’s top two-wheel motorsport series with F1, the pinnacle of four-wheel racing.

Under the terms of the deal, Dorna, the previous rights holder of MotoGP, will continue to operate as an independent entity within Liberty Media’s Formula One Group tracking stock. Carmelo Ezpeleta will retain his position as CEO of Dorna, with the company remaining headquartered in Madrid.

Liberty Media has secured an 86% stake in Dorna, while the management team retains a 14% share of the business.

Greg Maffei, President and CEO of Liberty Media, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, highlighting MotoGP’s global appeal, devoted fan base, and strong financial performance. He emphasized plans to expand the sport’s reach and enhance its value for fans, teams, partners, and shareholders.

Carmelo Ezpeleta echoed Maffei’s sentiments, calling the acquisition a significant milestone in MotoGP’s evolution. He praised MotoGP’s existing global presence and growth potential, expressing confidence in Liberty Media’s ability to further expand the sport’s fan base worldwide.

The announcement comes ahead of MotoGP’s upcoming round at the Circuit of the Americas in Texas, providing an opportune moment for Liberty Media to establish its presence in the United States.

Having previously revitalized F1’s popularity and expanded its reach, Liberty Media’s acquisition of MotoGP signals a new chapter for the premier motorcycle racing series. With their successful track record and strategic vision, MotoGP can anticipate further growth and innovation under Liberty Media’s stewardship.

The acquisition of MotoGP adds to Liberty Media’s portfolio of leading sports and entertainment assets, building upon the success of initiatives like the popular Netflix series ‘Drive To Survive’ and F1’s expansion into new markets such as the United States, with races in Las Vegas and Miami.

Liberty Me-dia secured the acquisition of MotoGP in a competitive bidding process, outpacing contenders like Qatar Sports Investments and TKO, further solidifying their position as leaders in the global sports and entertainment landscape.
