Oscar Piastri Explains How McLaren Seat Issue Led to Rib Injury: ‘A Pressure Point That Gave Up’

Oscar Piastri, McLaren’s rising star, has opened up about the cause of his recent rib injury. Shedding light on how a poorly-fitted race seat in his McLaren played a significant role in his discomfort. Piastri, who celebrated his first Formula 1 victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Has been candid about his struggle with a rib injury that affected him throughout several race weekends.

In a post shared on Instagram during summer break, Piastri revealed extent of his injury, including a fractured rib bone. Accompanying the post were images from the early part of the season and an ultrasound scan showing a fracture in his sixth rib. The scan conducted the Monday after the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, where the injury first appeared, showed the date.

In an interview with F1 TV at the Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort, Piastri explained how the injury came about. He attributed the problem to a seat that was not properly fitted to his body. “You make the seat at the start of the year, and sometimes you get it a little bit wrong. Some tracks don’t expose the issue, but tracks like Barcelona, Austria, and Silverstone are quite demanding,” Piastri said. “It was just a bit of a pressure point which eventually gave up.”

Piastri’s comments reveal that the seat’s design led to a pressure point on his rib, which worsened over time, culminating in a fracture. Despite the discomfort, the Australian driver noted that the team made adjustments promptly. “We identified what we could change on the seat. Even with the rib broken, the pain subsided significantly once we adjusted a few things,” he explained.

The injury did not seem to worsen during subsequent races in Budapest and Spa, and Piastri confirmed that the changes to the seat improved his condition. “Even while driving around Budapest and Spa, the injury didn’t get worse. He concluded that it actually improved.

Piastri’s openness about the injury and the modifications made to his seat underscore the meticulous nature of F1 car setups and the impact of even minor adjustments on driver performance and comfort. As Piastri continues his promising career, it’s clear that both he and McLaren are keen to avoid similar issues in the future, ensuring optimal conditions for their talented driver.
