Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton expressed his disappointment after finishing fourth in a challenging Canadian Grand Prix, calling it “one of my worst races.” Despite a promising start, he lost the final podium position to his teammate George Russell. Who overtook him in the final chicane.
Hamilton started seventh on the grid, struggling to carry his practice form into qualifying. He spent much of the race behind Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso. However, he gained an advantage during the first safety car period. Triggered by Logan Sargeant’s crash, allowing him to jump ahead of Alonso. This move brought him closer to the leading pack. After a second safety car period, Hamilton managed to overtake Russell and McLaren’s Oscar Piastri.
Despite these gains, Russell’s medium tires proved advantageous in the closing stages, allowing him to reclaim a podium spot. This marked Russell’s first top-five finish of the season, aside from his podium in the Chinese Grand Prix sprint race.
When asked if he felt better after the race compared to qualifying, Hamilton told Sky Sports F1, “Not really much different. Over the weekend, it was a really poor performance from myself. Yesterday, some other things came into it, but mostly myself, and then today, just one of the worst races I have driven, lots of mistakes. If I had qualified better, I would have been in a much better position. So it is what it is, I will go back to the drawing board.”

Despite his disappointment, Hamilton acknowledged the progress made by Mercedes, especially with the new front wing that improved the car’s performance. “A big thank you to everyone back at the factory because it is becoming a car we can fight with. That is the real positive going into the next part of the season. I know we have some more upgrades, hopefully, coming along the way. So it is going to be a close battle, and if I get my head on right, I will get better results at some stage.”
Hamilton believed the car was capable of winning, which added to his frustration. “I think this weekend, the car was capable of winning. That’s why it is not such a great feeling. But we will take the points and keep trying.”
Reflecting on what he could have done better, the seven-time champion said, “I could have just driven better with fewer mistakes. I was stuck behind Fernando, so there was nothing I could really do there. Lots of mistakes over the weekend as a whole, but lots of positives to take in terms of performance, so [I’ll] try and improve for the next race.”
