The FIA recently conducted a comprehensive fan survey aimed at gathering insights into the preferences and expectations of rally enthusiasts regarding the future of the World Rally Championship (WRC).
Over 11,000 fans participated in the online survey, providing valuable data that was presented at the World Motor Sport Council meeting. This feedback has contributed to shaping the FIA’s vision for the future of the championship.
Led by FIA deputy president Robert Reid and former WRC team boss David Richards, a working group analyzed the survey results and formulated a forward-looking concept for the WRC. Additionally, their collaboration aimed to address key challenges and enhance the future of the sport.
Key findings from the survey include a preference among fans (59%) for pursuing sustainable fuel over hybrid power in Rally1 cars. Additionally, there is a strong consensus (72%) for ensuring a level playing field for rally cars based on larger vehicles.
The overwhelming majority of respondents (97%) expressed a desire to see more manufacturers competing in the championship, highlighting the importance of increasing participation beyond the current top contenders.

Fans also indicated a preference (80%) for longer rallies and a balanced calendar featuring both endurance and sprint-style events. To address fans’ information needs, there is a call for enhanced media coverage, with a focus on providing a balanced mix of free and paid content across electronic and trade media platforms.
Despite the passion for WRC demonstrated by respondents, the survey revealed that fewer than 30% had attended a rally in the past year, citing factors such as cost and distance as barriers.
In response to the survey results, FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem emphasized the significance of fan feedback in guiding the future direction of the championship.
