With Lewis Hamilton replacing him at Ferrari, Carlos Sainz’s Formula 1 future is up in the air. Sky Sports commentator David Croft believes Sainz has two main options: Williams or the Sauber team that will become Audi’s works entry in 2026.
Ferrari announced their decision to part ways with Sainz in February. Despite his impressive performance with three race wins, Ferrari opted for the experience of Hamilton in their pursuit of an eighth championship title.
Sainz’s professionalism has been commendable throughout the situation. He and Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur have maintained a positive working relationship, with Sainz continuing to contribute to the team’s success.
Initial rumors placed Sainz at Mercedes or Red Bull. Red Bull, however, has opted to retain Sergio Perez, while Mercedes is yet to choose Hamilton’s replacement. Recent reports suggest Toto Wolff is considering Max Verstappen or rising star Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
Croft believes Williams is the more likely destination for Sainz. “It’s not about money,” says Croft. “He has a decision: Audi or Williams.”
While Audi’s future F1 project holds promise, it’s still in its early stages. Williams, on the other hand, is a known entity with a rich F1 history, although they’ve struggled in recent years.
“Personally, hand on heart, I think he’ll go to Williams,” predicts Croft. He sees the established team as a better fit for Sainz at this point, especially considering the lack of clarity surrounding Audi’s vision.
The arrival of James Vowles as team principal last season has revitalized Williams, according to Croft. Vowles’ impressive leadership could be a major factor in Sainz’s decision.
“I think it would be fantastic,” says Croft about a potential Sainz-Vowles pairing at Williams. “James is a very, very inspiring person. He has a strategy, and he knows that nothing happens overnight. He is selling a dream.”
With a powerful Mercedes engine arriving in 2026, Williams seems to be on an upward trajectory. Moreover, if Croft’s prediction holds true, Sainz could indeed play a key role in propelling the team back to the forefront of F1. Consequently, this partnership could significantly enhance Williams’ performance and competitiveness in the coming seasons.
