With championship races often decided well before the season finale, Liberty Media, owner of Formula 1, ponders introducing a play-off system to heighten the drama.
Currently, the fight for the championship title has been settled in the last race only once in the past seven seasons. An expanding race calendar and additional points from sprint races further reduce the chances of a nail-biting finale.
Liberty Media proposes NASCAR-style play-offs, where a select group of drivers battle it out in a condensed format towards the end of the season, as a potential solution. While this ensures a thrilling final race, it might not always crown the most consistent driver.
Liberty Media CEO Greg Maffei acknowledges the appeal of a guaranteed last-race showdown but emphasizes the value of the traditional season-long championship format. He highlights baseball, another sport with a season-long title chase, as an example.
However, Maffei recognizes the need for adaptation, pointing to recent rule changes in baseball to enhance the viewing experience. He suggests that F1, despite its rich traditions, shouldn’t be afraid of change if it improves the sport.
Liberty Media’s introduction of sprint races, awarding additional points at select events, demonstrates their willingness to adapt based on fan preferences. Understanding fan demographics and catering to their desires is crucial, especially since other sports are doing the same, according to Maffei.
The possibility of F1 play-offs remains on the horizon. While not an immediate plan, Liberty Media is exploring the concept as it seeks to balance tradition with the ever-evolving landscape of sports entertainment.
