At the recent Geneva meeting, while discussions on a new points structure did not reach a consensus, Formula 1 did finalize plans for the introduction of new rear-facing cameras at the upcoming Barcelona event in June.
This new camera placement aims to provide fans with a fresh perspective on the action, as it will be mounted atop the rear crash structure protruding from the back of the car.
This marks a significant departure from the previous setup, where the rear-facing camera was positioned centrally near the cockpit. With the new angle, viewers can anticipate an unobstructed view behind the car. Offering a thrilling experience, especially during close battles on track.
Dean Locke, Formula 1’s director of broadcast and media, commented earlier this year on the potential of the new angle. Likening it to the spectacular onboard views seen in other racing categories such as saloon and touring car racing.

F1 conducted experiments with and the FIA last year to test the new rear-facing camera. While the resulting view was impressive, challenges arose due to the extreme location of the camera. Positioned four meters away from the processing unit. Technical issues such as interference needed to be addressed.
Despite these challenges, with technical problems resolved and safety concerns addressed, approval was obtained from teams and the FIA to implement the new camera placement starting from the Spanish Grand Prix onwards. Fans can look forward to enhanced viewing experiences and closer insights into the intense battles on the track.
