Denny Hamlin, the victor of last year’s Bristol Night Race, faced a vastly different challenge on Sunday as the first spring Bristol event returned to asphalt for the first time since 2020, following three years of dirt track races.
From the outset, it was evident that race would be defined by delicate balance of tire preservation and strategic maneuvering.
Despite Goodyear providing the same tire combination as the previous year, an unusual lack of rubber deposition on the track led to accelerated tire wear, prompting NASCAR to permit an additional set of tires midway through the race. Yet, with many teams experiencing tire issues after just 47-50 laps, the pace of the race was significantly impacted.
Hamlin’s #11 Joe Gibbs Racing team showcased superior adaptability, with Hamlin leading for a race-high 163 out of 500 laps.
In a thrilling finish, Hamlin successfully fended off his teammate Martin Truex Jr. in the final 20. Laps amid challenges from lapped traffic, ultimately securing victory with a 1.083-second lead. Only five cars managed to finish on the lead lap.
Brad Keselowski claimed third place, followed by Alex Bowman in fourth, and Kyle Larson rebounding from a pit road penalty to finish fifth.
The top 10 positions were rounded out by John Hunter Nemechek, Chris Buescher, Chase Elliott, Ty Gibbs, and Christopher Bell.
This race featured a record-setting 54 lead changes among 16 different drivers.
Gibbs clinched the Stage 1 victory over Larson under caution, while Joey Logano relinquished the lead to. Gibbs with just two laps remaining in Stage 2, resulting in Gibbs’ Stage 2 triumph.
Unfortunately, William Byron’s hopes were dashed early on when he collided with the wall within the opening 25 laps, damaging the #24 Chevrolet.
Hamlin’s dominance continued as he regained the lead following a restart. Despite Gibbs briefly overtaking him – a move that marked the 41st lead change, setting a new track record.
A collision between Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Austin Cindric, narrowly avoiding Todd Gilliland. Prompted another caution, during which Hamlin retained his lead following a pit stop.
Larson faced a setback with a penalty for equipment interference, forcing him to restart from the rear of the field. While Hamlin led the charge with less than 20 laps to go.
In a thrilling climax, Hamlin and Truex engaged in a battle for the lead amidst lapped traffic, with Hamlin emerging victorious in the end.
