After a strong performance at the Singapore Grand Prix, Lando Norris faced a frustrating afternoon at the Circuit of the Americas during the United States Grand Prix. Despite securing pole position in a dramatic qualifying session on Saturday, the British driver couldn’t convert that into a podium finish, ultimately ending the race in fourth place.
Norris had a promising start, but an early battle at Turn 1 with championship leader Max Verstappen forced him wide, dropping him back to fourth position. The McLaren driver initially struggled with tyre graining, but once his tyres came into form, he set a series of quick laps and extended his first stint impressively.
A late pit stop put Norris back in fourth, and he quickly closed the gap to Verstappen, pushing hard to reclaim a podium spot. However, during one of his overtaking attempts, Norris went off the track, which resulted in a time penalty from the race stewards, costing him his podium hopes.
Reflecting on the race, Norris expressed his frustration: “It was a challenging afternoon. Starting from pole and finishing fourth isn’t what we expected, but it was tough out there with Ferrari showing strong pace all weekend. I felt confident about securing a podium, but unfortunately, we lost that opportunity due to a decision beyond our control. We’ll regroup as a team and aim for better results in Mexico.”
His McLaren teammate, Oscar Piastri, echoed similar sentiments. Starting and finishing in fifth place, Piastri had a relatively quiet race but emphasized the importance of scoring vital points for the Constructors’ Championship. “It was a bit of a lonely race, starting and ending in P5. On the positive side, we collected valuable points, which is crucial in the championship battle. But we couldn’t quite match Ferrari’s pace today, and that was frustrating,” Piastri remarked.
McLaren team principal Andrea Stella also voiced his disappointment, particularly with how Verstappen’s move in Turn 1 affected Norris’ race at the start. “It was a tight race, as we expected, with three teams capable of winning. It’s unfortunate that Lando’s race was compromised when Max pushed him wide at the start, and then we lost the podium due to a penalty we don’t agree with,” Stella said.
He continued, “We feel the five-second penalty was an unfair way to change the outcome of the race. But we are proud of the team’s efforts, particularly Oscar’s well-executed drive, which earned important points. Now, we reset, turn the page, and focus on the next race in Mexico.”
As McLaren looks ahead, both Norris and Piastri are determined to bounce back stronger in the upcoming rounds, with the Mexican Grand Prix being their next chance to make further strides in the championship.
