Alonso: Red Bull’s Newey Departure Doesn’t Spell Trouble for F1 Team

Fernando Alonso has downplayed concerns over Red Bull Racing’s stability following the announcement of Adrian Newey’s departure after a remarkable 19-year tenure as the team’s design guru.

Newey’s decision to leave was reportedly influenced by internal power dynamics at Red Bull, which remain unresolved.

When asked about Newey’s exit amidst the team’s internal turmoil, Alonso responded: “I don’t think so. Obviously, they have been dominating the sport since 2021, and any off-track developments generate significant attention given their position as the team to beat.”

Reflecting on the significance of Newey’s departure, Alonso noted that such a move would attract more attention if it occurred within a leading team like Red Bull, compared to a lesser-known outfit.

While Lawrence Stroll of Aston Martin has expressed interest in Newey’s services, with Ferrari also reportedly in the mix. Alonso expressed admiration for the designer and expressed a desire to work with him at some point.

“I’ve always wanted to work with him,” Alonso stated. “I consider him one of the best Formula 1 has ever seen. And it’s a privilege to be competing alongside him in the paddock.”

Regarding the potential impact on his own team, Alonso emphasized satisfaction with their current technical department. Acknowledging that Newey’s future decisions are ultimately his own.

Newey’s departure from Red Bull is scheduled for March-2025, with designer continuing to work on the RB17 hypercar until then. However, he will no longer be actively involved in the team’s technical developments or future projects beyond that point.
