Carlos Sainz’s emotional departure from Ferrari following the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix marked the end of a significant chapter in his Formula 1 career. Hours after the race, a farewell video played in the paddock, showing the appreciation of the team for the Spaniard’s four years with the Scuderia. All team members wore special “Grazie Carlos” caps, with Sainz wearing his backwards to showcase the tribute.
Sainz’s second-place finish, behind Lando Norris, was not enough to help Ferrari capture the title from McLaren, but it capped off a four-year stint that saw the 30-year-old leave an indelible mark on the team. His dedication and effort helped Ferrari regain its competitiveness in the sport, although the season had a bittersweet tone, as Sainz learned he would be replaced by Lewis Hamilton in 2025.
The news of his replacement came as a shock to the Madrid native, who had worked tirelessly to prove himself since joining Ferrari in 2021. Initially considered a supporting driver to Charles Leclerc, Sainz’s remarkable consistency, talent, and work ethic saw him not only match Leclerc’s pace but often challenge him for supremacy within the team. Their partnership, despite occasional radio tensions, proved productive, with both drivers pushing each other to new heights.
Sainz, who won four races with Ferrari, including two this season after recovering from appendicitis, shared the emotional toll of learning that Ferrari would replace him. Reflecting on his win at the Australian Grand Prix, where his family and loved ones were present, Sainz admitted the news of his exit had left him in a state of shock.
“I wasn’t prepared for that kind of news. I was hurt… but I regrouped and got training again,” Sainz said. “After winning in Australia, I thought about how lucky I am to have such a supportive circle around me.”
Although initially angry, Sainz came to terms with Ferrari’s decision, acknowledging that replacing him with seven-time world champion Hamilton was an understandable move for the team. Despite his disappointment, he remained professional, promising to give his best for Ferrari until the end.

As the season progressed, Sainz’s focus remained on supporting the team’s efforts to secure a strong finish, culminating in his final victory for Ferrari in Mexico. Though he admitted it was “bittersweet” to see Ferrari’s resurgence from the outside, he maintained his commitment to the team’s success, helping them in the constructors’ title race.
“It was bittersweet because I knew Ferrari could fight for the championship next year, and I wouldn’t be there,” he reflected. “But I’m proud of how I kept myself motivated and gave my all until the end.”
Sainz’s decision to move to Williams for 2025 comes with a realization that fighting for race wins is no longer his immediate priority. Having turned down opportunities from Red Bull and other teams, he was drawn to Williams by the passion and determination of their management, especially team principal James Vowles.
While his departure from Ferrari leaves a void, Sainz’s graceful exit and unwavering professionalism stand as a testament to his character. From his first race wins and podiums with Ferrari to his role in the team’s recovery, Sainz has proven himself a valuable asset both on and off the track.
As he moves on to a new chapter with Williams, Sainz leaves behind a legacy of resilience, class, and commitment to the sport. F1’s smooth operator has shown he is as much a classy competitor as he is a talented driver.
