Wayne Bridge Advocates for Increased Mental Health Support

Former Chelsea footballer Wayne Bridge is speaking out about the importance of mental health support, drawing from his own experiences during his career. Bridge, now 43 years old and retired from professional football since 2014, played for several clubs including Chelsea, Manchester City, and West Ham United.

In a recent interview as part of the ‘Talk More Than Football’ campaign with Three and Chelsea. Bridge opened up about his struggles with anxiety and depression. Which he discovered during his time on reality TV shows such as ITV’s “I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!” and Channel 4’s “SAS: Who Dares Wins.”

Reflecting on his journey, Bridge emphasized the difficulty of seeking help for mental health issues. Especially within the context of sports culture where there is pressure to maintain a facade of strength. He acknowledged that despite playing over 300 Premier League matches. He battled with self-confidence and never sought professional support during his playing days.

He stressed the importance of public figures, including athletes. Speaking out about their struggles to encourage others to seek help and reduce the stigma associated with mental health.

Bridge’s advocacy reflects a broader movement toward destigmatizing mental health issues and promoting open dialogue and support systems for individuals struggling with their mental well-being.
