Virgil van Dijk heaped praise on Liverpool’s goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, describing him as “world class” and suggesting that Kelleher should have been named the man of the match in Liverpool’s Carabao Cup final victory against Chelsea at Wembley.
Despite Virgil van Dijk scoring the decisive winning goal and putting in a stellar performance, he insisted that Kelleher’s contribution was more deserving of recognition. Kelleher, Liverpool’s second-choice goalkeeper, made a total of nine saves during the 120 minutes of play, playing a crucial role in keeping Chelsea at bay.
Van Dijk, speaking alongside Kelleher after being awarded the man of the match, expressed admiration for the goalkeeper’s performance. I’m probably one of his biggest fans, I think. I have always said he is world class, and he stepped up today, again. It’s good to see. He’s a good boy, a good goalkeeper, and that’s what we need at a club like Liverpool.”

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp also commended Kelleher’s performance, calling it “unbelievable” and praising his maturity on the field. Klopp stated, “Caoimh was unbelievable. Such a mature performance. I say it often: we have the best goalkeeper in the world and the best Number two in the world. I’m so happy for him. Top game.”
Kelleher, reflecting on the victory, described it as another amazing moment and expressed his delight. He emphasized the significance of winning a trophy at Wembley and considered this year’s Carabao Cup success as more special, particularly without the need for a penalty shootout. Kelleher recognized the momentum from the win and stressed the team’s focus on upcoming FA Cup and Premier League fixtures.
With Alisson Becker sidelined, Kelleher is expected to continue featuring in goal for Liverpool in the coming weeks. The team’s schedule includes a FA Cup fifth-round match against Southampton and a Premier League fixture against Nottingham Forest.
