Ruben Amorim has downplayed the significance of Sporting Lisbon’s stunning 4-1 Champions League victory over Manchester City, ahead of his imminent move to Manchester United. Despite the impressive result, the 39-year-old Portuguese coach insisted that they should not view the triumph as a preview of how United will play under his management.
Amorim, who will officially take over as Manchester United’s head coach on November 11, made it clear that the tactics and style he has used at Sporting can not simply be replicated at his new club. Speaking after his side’s remarkable win over Pep Guardiola’s team in Lisbon, Amorim stated: “What I can tell you is that this doesn’t mean anything in particular – don’t take anything from this. We can not transport one reality to another. Manchester United cannot play the way we play, and we will have to adapt.”
Throughout his tenure at Sporting, Amorim has primarily employed a back-three formation, a stark contrast to the four-defender setup that Manchester United has relied on since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s departure. Despite these differences, Amorim remains eager to begin his journey at Old Trafford, expressing excitement for the challenge ahead. “It will be fun, very fun, and I’m ready for the challenge,” he said.
Amorim’s final match in charge of Sporting will take place this Sunday, when he faces his former club, Braga. Meanwhile, manchester United has scheduled his first game as head coach for November 24, when the Red Devils travel to Portman Road to face Ipswich Town.
