Italy was left frustrated after squandering a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Belgium in their Nations League A Group 2 match on Thursday. The Italian side took an early advantage, scoring just one minute into the game, with Federico Di Marco delivering a low cross that Andrea Cambiaso tapped in after Belgium goalkeeper Koen Casteels saved his initial shot.
Italy doubled their lead in the 24th minute when Di Marco volleyed a pass to Cambiaso, whose second attempt Casteels again thwarted. However, striker Mateo Retegui was on hand to convert the rebound, putting Italy firmly in control.
The match turned dramatically when the referee showed Italian midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini a red card after a VAR review for striking Belgium’s Theate. This crucial moment shifted the momentum in favor of Belgium.
Shortly after the red card, Belgium capitalized on their numerical advantage. Maxim De Cuyper reduced the deficit with a well-placed shot from the edge of the box, curling it in after a clever free-kick routine.
Belgium continued to press and found the equalizer in the 61st minute when Leandro Trossard poked home from close range, completing the comeback and ensuring a share of the spoils.
With this result, Italy will reflect on missed opportunities, while Belgium will take heart from their resilient performance in overcoming a two-goal deficit.
