Kai Havertz is facing criticism from German football fans who are overwhelmingly calling for him to be dropped from the starting lineup after his performances at Euro 2024.
The Arsenal midfielder has started in all three of Germany’s group stage matches, during which Julian Nagelmann’s team comfortably progressed to the knockout stages. They secured a convincing 5-1 victory over Scotland, a 2-0 win against Hungary, and a draw with Switzerland on Sunday.
However, despite Germany’s successes, Havertz has not managed to score or provide an assist since the opening game against Scotland. Instead, Germany has relied on substitute Niclas Fullkrug to score crucial goals that ensured their advancement.
With Germany set to face the runners-up of Group C in the knockout stage, currently Denmark, fans are now demanding that Nagelsmann makes a bold selection change.
A poll conducted by German newspaper Bild, which gathered opinions from 138,000 people. Revealed that a staggering 90 percent of respondents voted for Havertz to be replaced by Borussia Dortmund’s Fullkrug.
Havertz’s only goal in the tournament so far came from a penalty against Scotland, and he managed just one shot on target against Switzerland. In contrast, Fullkrug scored a vital stoppage-time equalizer against Switzerland and had previously scored against Scotland as well.
While Havertz typically plays as a false nine for both Germany and Arsenal, Fullkrug is known as a traditional striker. Despite making his international debut only in November 2022, at the age of 31. Fullkrug has an impressive record of 13 goals in 19 appearances for Germany.
Nagelsmann has defended Havertz’s performances, noting his contributions and chances created. However, he acknowledged that Fullkrug is pressing hard for a starting position.
“Nico (Fullkrug) has a chance to start, just like Kai. Kai had three good chances, and he was frustrated that he couldn’t convert two of them. He also played well,” Nagelsmann commented.
“We always need players on the bench who can change the course of a game. We have versatile substitutes who can make an impact. Nico presents strong arguments both for continuing as a substitute, where he performs excellently, and for starting games.”
The decision on who starts will depend on tactical analysis and opponent assessment, highlighting the competitive dynamics within the German squad as they progress through the tournament.
