Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has issued a clarification following comments he made during a post-match press conference after his side’s 3-3 draw with Feyenoord in the UEFA Champions League. During the interview, visible scratch marks on Pep Guardiola’s forehead prompted a question about their origin.
When asked by reporters about a mark on his nose, Pep Guardiola made a scratching motion with his finger and said, “With my finger, my nail,” before adding, “I want to harm myself,” followed by laughter as he left the press conference.
The comment immediately raised concerns, with many interpreting it as making light of the serious issue of self-harm. In response, Pep Guardiola issued a statement through his official social media accounts, expressing regret for any misunderstanding.
“I was caught off guard with a question at the end of a press conference last night about a scratch which had appeared on my face, and explained that a sharp fingernail had accidentally caused this,” the statement read. “I did not intend my answer to make light of the very serious issue of self-harm.”
Guardiola further emphasized his awareness of mental health struggles faced by many individuals. “I am fully aware that many people struggle with mental health issues every day,” the statement continued, also referencing the Samaritans charity as a means to highlight how people can seek support.
The incident occurred following a dramatic 3-3 draw with Feyenoord at the Etihad Stadium, where City squandered a 3-0 lead. Despite the draw ending their five-match losing streak, Guardiola’s side has not won since their 1-0 victory over Southampton on October 26. City currently sit second in the Premier League, trailing leaders Liverpool by eight points, and will face them at Anfield on Sunday.
Guardiola clarified his remarks to reassure fans that he did not intend to trivialize a sensitive topic.
