Germany has officially announced its intention to bid for the 2029 Women’s European Championship, according to the Football Association of Germany (DFB). This move follows Germany’s role as the host for the men’s UEFA Euro 2024.
DFB President Bernd Neuendorf described the bid as the organization’s “flagship project,” aimed at providing a significant boost to women’s football in the country. Germany previously hosted the Women’s Euros in 1989 (as West Germany) and 2001.
In addition to Germany, Portugal, Denmark, and Sweden have also expressed their interest in hosting the tournament. The selection committee will choose the host nation in December 2025.
DFB General Secretary Heike Ullrich emphasized Germany’s credentials, noting its reputation as a “good and reliable host” with “excellent stadium infrastructure” and strong cooperation between host cities and local stakeholders.
Germany recently attempted to host the 2027 Women’s World Cup but was unsuccessful, as Brazil was selected as the host in May. The upcoming Women’s Euros, scheduled for 2025, will take place in neighboring Switzerland.
Germany holds the record for the most Women’s Euros titles, having won the competition eight times since its inception in 1984. England won the most recent edition in 2022, defeating Germany 2-1 after extra time in the final at Wembley Stadium.
