Dortmund Thrashes Celtic 7-1; Barcelona, Man City, and Arsenal Celebrate Champions League Victories

In a thrilling night of Champions League action, Borussia Dortmund showcased their attacking prowess by demolishing Celtic 7-1 at home, with Karim Adeyemi stealing the spotlight with a first-half hat trick. This emphatic victory marked Dortmund’s second significant win in the competition, following Bayern Munich’s stunning 9-2 triumph over Dinamo Zagreb in the opening matchday.

Barcelona and Manchester City also marked their first wins in the newly restructured Champions League. Barcelona cruised to a 5-0 victory over Swiss side Young Boys, led by former striker Robert Lewandowski, while City dispatched Slovan Bratislava with a commanding 4-0 win, featuring Erling Haaland, who scored his 42nd goal in just 41 Champions League appearances. City had previously drawn 0-0 with Inter Milan, and Barcelona sought redemption after a 2-1 loss to Monaco in their first match under new coach Hansi Flick.

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal delivered a strong performance, defeating Paris Saint-Germain 2-0. Goals from Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka in the first half secured the win against Arteta’s former club, with PSG coach Luis Enrique facing criticism for omitting Ousmane Dembélé from the lineup.

Despite Dortmund’s impressive results, fans voiced their displeasure with UEFA’s recent reforms, which replaced the traditional group stage with a league format involving 36 teams playing eight opponents each. A large tifo displayed by Dortmund supporters criticized the changes, which UEFA claims will create more balanced matches. However, the overwhelming victories for teams like Barcelona, Manchester City, and Dortmund suggest otherwise.

The night was further highlighted by Inter Milan’s 4-0 victory over Red Star Belgrade and tournament debutant Brest’s impressive 4-0 win against Salzburg. Inter’s Iranian forward Mehdi Taremi was instrumental, scoring a penalty and assisting two goals shortly after his country launched missile strikes against Israel.

Additionally, Senegalese striker Abdallah Sima netted twice for Brest, bringing his total to three goals in two matches following his scoring debut against Sturm Graz. In other notable results, Bayer Leverkusen edged AC Milan 1-0, courtesy of a well-executed goal by Victor Boniface, while Sporting Lisbon managed a late equalizer for a 1-1 draw at PSV Eindhoven. Kaan Kairinen’s stunning free kick also secured a 1-1 draw for Prague at Stuttgart, where fans celebrated the team’s return to European competition with impressive choreography.

As the Champions League continues to unfold, these results set the stage for an exciting tournament ahead, despite the controversies surrounding its new format.
