Bayern Munich has reached an agreement with Fulham to sign Portugal midfielder Joao Palhinha for a total sum of £47.4m. The initial payment to Fulham amounts to £43.2m, with an additional £4.2m in potential add-ons. This transfer marks a record sale for Fulham.
Palhinha is set to ink a four-year contract at the Allianz Arena but will defer his medical until after Portugal’s Euro 2024 campaign concludes. Currently, the 2016 European champions are preparing to face France in the quarter-finals scheduled for Friday in Hamburg.
Originally joining Fulham from Sporting Lisbon in 2022, Palhinha was on the verge of moving to Bayern last summer, but the deal collapsed on Transfer Deadline Day due to Fulham’s inability to secure a replacement in time. Despite this setback, Palhinha traveled to Germany for a medical after receiving permission from Fulham.
Bayern persisted in their pursuit and had a previous offer rejected earlier this summer, amid interest from Manchester United and Barcelona. Fulham had previously turned down a £45m bid from West Ham in July last year.
The summer transfer window is currently open in the Premier League and Scottish Premiership, with the deadline set for August 30 at 11pm UK time for England and 11.30pm for Scotland. This scheduling aligns with other major European leagues following discussions with counterparts in England, Germany, Italy, Spain, and France.
