Pep Guardiola clarified recent comments made during a press conference after reporters questioned him about a scratch on his face, which led to concerns that he was making light of self-harm. The Manchester City manager, who had appeared with visible marks on his forehead following his side’s 3-3 draw with Feyenoord in the Champions League, made an offhand remark about the injury that prompted backlash.
During the post-match news conference, reporters asked Guardiola about a mark on his nose. In response, he mimed a scratching motion with his finger and jokingly said, “I want to harm myself,” before laughing and abruptly leaving the press room.
The comment quickly attracted criticism for its insensitivity to mental health issues. In a statement issued through his official social media accounts, Guardiola apologized and clarified his intent.
“A question about a scratch on my face caught me off guard, and I explained that a sharp fingernail had accidentally caused it,” the statement read. “My response was never meant to trivialize or make light of the very serious issue of self-harm.”

Guardiola expressed his awareness of the struggles many individuals face with mental health and referenced the Samaritans charity as a resource for those in need of help.
The incident followed Manchester City’s disappointing Champions League draw against Feyenoord, which ended their five-match losing streak in the competition. Despite the result, City has not won since their 1-0 victory over Southampton on October 26, and they currently sit 15th in the Champions League standings.
Guardiola’s side is second in the Premier League, eight points behind leaders Liverpool, and will face them at Anfield on Sunday in a crucial league clash.
