Thomas Tuchel, the Champions League-winning coach, is reportedly poised to take over as the new head coach of England’s national football team. After stepping down from Bayern Munich at the end of last season. Widespread reports in the English media expect Tuchel to succeed Gareth Southgate.

The BBC and other major outlets have stated that the German manager has agreed to terms with the English Football Association (FA) and is set to be announced as the third non-English coach in the team’s history, following in the footsteps of Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello. Reports from Sky Germany suggest Tuchel will sign an 18-month contract, with his tenure beginning in January 2024.

Though the FA has yet to confirm the appointment, England captain Harry Kane, who played under Tuchel during his time at Bayern Munich, hinted at the move. “Obviously, I know Thomas well from last year. Fantastic coach, fantastic person. I am sure the guys at the FA will contact me when they know more about it,” Kane told Sky Sports.

Tuchel is a familiar name to English football fans, having led Chelsea to a Champions League triumph in 2021, defeating Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the final. He also guided Chelsea to victories in the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup. His coaching resume includes winning two Ligue 1 titles with Paris Saint-Germain and a Bundesliga title with Bayern Munich, establishing him as one of Europe’s top managers.

The search for a new England coach began after Southgate stepped down following the team’s loss in the final of the 2024 UEFA European Championship. Southgate’s tenure was notable for leading England to consecutive European Championship finals and a World Cup semifinal in 2018.

Lee Carsley, England’s Under-21 coach, has served as the interim head coach and the FA initially considered him a candidate for the permanent role. However, Carsley recently distanced himself from the position, stating that England deserves a “world-class coach.”

Tuchel, with his experience managing elite European clubs, fits the profile set out by the FA. In its job advertisement, the FA emphasized that its next head coach should have “significant experience of English football” and a proven track record in the Premier League or major international competitions. The team expects the new coach to lead them toward winning a major tournament and maintaining their status as one of the world’s top teams.

With Tuchel’s imminent appointment, England’s football future under his leadership is generating significant anticipation.
