Thomas Tuchel didn’t hold back his criticism of Bayern Munich after their disappointing 2-2 draw against Freiburg on Friday night, further deepening the crisis at the Allianz Arena.
Despite guiding Bayern to the German title last March after succeeding Julian Nagelsmann, Tuchel has faced significant challenges this season. The team currently trails title rivals Bayer Leverkusen, who hold a healthy lead at the Bundesliga summit. The late collapse against Freiburg only exacerbated Bayern’s woes.
Thomas Tuchel’s impending departure at the end of the season, with Bayer Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso rumored to replace him, hasn’t alleviated Bayern’s struggles. The lack of clarity over future plans seems to have had little impact on the team’s performance.
Post-match, Tuchel criticized aspects of Bayern’s play, describing some moments as “terrible.” He lamented, “We had a terrible half an hour. The first half was only OK for 10-15 minutes. In the second half, we showed improvement with better spirit and discipline, but we failed to defend properly, resulting in Freiburg’s late equalizer.”
With just 10 league games remaining, Bayern faces an uphill battle to retain their domestic crown, trailing behind Leverkusen. Their European campaign is also in jeopardy after losing the first leg of their Champions League Round of 16 tie against Lazio.
Reports suggest that Tuchel’s relationship with the Bayern dressing room has been divisive. While some players, like England captain Harry Kane, support Tuchel, others are less enthusiastic. Tuchel reportedly addressed the team to quell unrest, emphasizing the need for unity and focus despite his imminent departure.
