After a decade as Switzerland’s top goalkeeper, Yann Sommer has announced his retirement from the national team at age 35. His decision, revealed by the Swiss football federation, comes as he focuses on his career with Inter Milan.
Sommer, who made his debut for Switzerland in 2012, has been a key figure for the team, earning 94 caps over his international career. He represented Switzerland in three World Cups and three European Championships. His final game for the national team was a penalty shootout loss to England in the Euro 2024 quarterfinals last month.
Among Sommer’s memorable moments was his crucial penalty save against Kylian Mbappé in a shootout victory over France during the Euro 2020 round of 16. Sommer’s club career has been equally impressive, including winning Serie A with Inter Milan, Bundesliga titles with Bayern Munich, and multiple league championships with Basel.
With Sommer’s retirement, Gregor Kobel of Borussia Dortmund is expected to become Switzerland’s first-choice goalkeeper. Kobel, 26, has earned five caps for Switzerland and played at the 2022 World Cup, stepping in during Sommer’s absence due to illness.
Switzerland’s upcoming fixtures include matches against Denmark and Euro 2024 champion Spain on September 5 and 8, respectively, in the top tier of the UEFA Nations League.
