Following the collapse of broadcast rights renewal talks between the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and StarTimes, attention has now turned to who might step in as the new media partner for the Ghana Premier League. All signs currently point to SuperSport being the frontrunner.
According to insiders, the South African pay-TV giant is at the top of the GFA’s list of potential broadcast partners. While nothing has been confirmed publicly, industry chatter suggests SuperSport has shown interest in the Ghanaian marketand is actively exploring a return to Ghana football coverage.
SuperSport’s strong presence across the African continent, particularly in Nigeria, South Africa, and Zambia, gives it a proven track record in sports broadcasting. This positions them as a strong and reliable alternative, especially given the GFA’s desire for a more financially stable and transparent partner.
The breakdown in negotiations with StarTimes reportedly stems from financial disagreements and an outstanding debt of over USD 842,000. These issues have made the GFA cautious and more inclined to partner with an organisation that can ensure long-term consistency and quality coverage.
SuperSport’s reputation for top-tier production, broad distribution reach, and commitment to African sports make them an appealing choice. Although no official deal has been announced, the possibility of SuperSport replacing StarTimes now appears increasingly likely.
The GFA, aiming to boost both the commercial value and media exposure of the Ghana Premier League, could view SuperSport as the ideal partner to elevate the league’s profile locally and internationally. If the deal materialises, it could mark a significant step forward for Ghanaian football broadcasting.
