Richard Keys has reinforced his critique of Premier League referee Michael Oliver. Asserting that Oliver considers himself “above reproach” and suggesting that VAR is ineffective in games officiated by him.
Michael Oliver’s decision not to award Liverpool a last-minute penalty during their draw against Manchester City at Anfield sparked controversy. After Jeremy Doku’s raised leg made contact with Alexis Mac Allister’s ribs, the penalty appeal was dismissed by Oliver.
In response to the fallout, Keys took to X to express his continued criticism of Oliver and the VAR system. He stated, “Until someone in VAR finds the courage to tell Oliver that he’s made a mistake. What we saw happen at Anfield yesterday – and most weeks elsewhere – will keep happening. I’ve said it all this season & last. He thinks he’s above reproach. VAR is a waste of time when he’s on the pitch.”
Keys had previously questioned VAR’s role during Liverpool’s match against Brentford, alleging that VAR official David Coote refrained from intervening due to Michael Oliver’s perceived authority. He claimed, “Operators are scared of Oliver so they back off. We know this because Mike Dean admitted as much early in the season. Refs help their mates out and duck controversy.”
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp expressed his frustration with the decision, emphasizing his belief that the incident warranted a penalty. Klopp questioned the criteria for what constitutes a “clear and obvious” error, stating, “Why would the guy in the (VAR) studio think that is not clear and obvious? What must you have for lunch if you think that is not clear and obvious?”
Klopp reiterated his stance on the decision, asserting, “This situation on all positions on the pitch is 100 per cent a foul and it’s a yellow card.”
In light of the ongoing debate surrounding refereeing decisions and the VAR system, Keys’ comments reflect a broader discussion within the football community regarding officiating standards and the application of technology in the game.
