Atletico Madrid and Lille will make history next month in a Champions League match, expecting a record number of disabled fans in attendance.
Atletico Madrid has partnered with AccessibAll, an organization dedicated to promoting greater accessibility in sports for disabled fans. Their goal is to break the record for the highest number of disabled supporters at a single soccer match. The landmark event will take place on October 23 at Atletico’s Civitas Metropolitano stadium.
With the support of Spanish authorities, this initiative seeks to enhance inclusivity in football and provide disabled fans the opportunity to experience live matches with ease. In a statement, AccessibAll emphasized its commitment to making football more accessible for all, ensuring that the joy of live sports is available to everyone.
According to UEFA, Real Betis and Real Valladolid set the current record for the most inclusive football match last year, with 1,740 disabled fans attending at the Benito Villamarin stadium.
In addition to AccessibAll, several other organizations, including Integrated Dreams—which advocates for increased representation of disabled people in sports—and the World Football Summit, are actively participating in this ambitious attempt to set a new benchmark for inclusivity.
As Atletico Madrid prepares to host Lille, the event promises to be a significant moment not just in the world of football, but also in the ongoing effort to make live sports more inclusive and accessible for disabled fans worldwide.
