The Premier League’s aspiration to secure a fifth Champions League berth for next season now hangs in the balance following recent setbacks for English clubs in European competitions.
With UEFA expanding the Champions League format for the upcoming season, the allocation of spots is based on each league’s coefficient ranking. Serie A has already secured its place as the top-ranked league, leaving the Premier League and Bundesliga competing for the second spot.
England initially had five clubs remaining in European competitions, one more than Germany. However, after Arsenal’s defeat to Bayern Munich and Manchester City’s elimination by Real Madrid, the English contingent could see a reduction to just one club.
The pressure now falls on Aston Villa, who face an uphill battle to overturn a 3-0 deficit against Atalanta. If they fail to advance, they would be the sole representative from England in the latter stages of European competition.
In contrast, Germany still boasts Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen in contention, giving them a slight advantage in the race for the additional Champions League spot.
The situation impacts teams like Villa and Tottenham the most. Tottenham, currently sitting in fifth place, are vying for European qualification but face tough fixtures against the league’s top teams.
Securing a Champions League spot would be a significant achievement for Villa, who could alternatively focus on winning the Europa Conference League. For Tottenham, it’s a test of their resilience under new management and without star striker Harry Kane.
