Ryan Giggs Hails Aaron Wan-Bissaka as Premier League Elite Defender After West Ham Transfer

Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has heaped praise on Aaron Wan-Bissaka, calling him one of the Premier League’s best defenders following his recent move to West Ham.

Erik ten Hag’s overhaul of Manchester United’s defense this summer has been significant. The club invested £58 million in Leny Yoro, who is now sidelined for three months due to a foot injury. Additionally, experienced defenders Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui were brought in from Bayern Munich. Wan-Bissaka’s departure to West Ham for £15 million facilitated Mazraoui’s arrival. A stark contrast to the £50 million United paid Crystal Palace for him in 2019.

Giggs, reflecting on Wan-Bissaka’s transfer, praised the 26-year-old’s defensive prowess. Speaking on the Webby & O’Neill YouTube channel, Giggs admitted that he would have found it challenging to face Wan-Bissaka one-on-one later in his career.

“I would’ve stayed away from him, especially later on in my career,” Giggs said. “I would’ve tried to take him places he didn’t want to go because, one-on-one, I think he’s one of the best in the league. Over 90 minutes, he’s very tough to play against.”

After an impressive season at Palace, where they named him Player of the Year, Wan-Bissaka moved to United. Despite a hefty transfer fee, the right-back showed his worth with nearly 200 appearances for United, showcasing exceptional tackling and one-on-one skills. However, his attacking contributions were not as prolific as expected, leading Ten Hag to seek an upgrade in Mazraoui.

Wan-Bissaka has since made his return to London, joining West Ham. Although he has yet to debut for the Hammers, he expressed enthusiasm about the move. “It was a no-brainer for me to join West Ham,” Wan-Bissaka said. “I’m excited and happy to be here. Being back in London means a lot to me, and I’m grateful for the warm welcome. I can’t wait to get on the pitch and contribute.”

Despite West Ham’s 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa in their opening match, Wan-Bissaka is optimistic about his new chapter. “I see a team that is in it together and pushes each other to win,” he added. “Being part of that and having the support of a good squad helps a lot.”

As Wan-Bissaka settles into his new role at West Ham, Giggs’ endorsement highlights the strong defensive qualities he brings to the Premier League.
