Premier League Star Alex Iwobi Gives Back to Community with Christmas Charity Initiative

Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi has made a heartwarming gesture this Christmas by giving back to his childhood community in East London, offering free food and essentials to those in need.

Iwobi, who was born in Nigeria and moved to the UK at a young age, spent his childhood in Canning Town, an area within the Borough of Newham known for its high poverty rates. Despite achieving success in his football career, Iwobi has maintained strong ties to the area and has always sought ways to support those who are struggling, especially during the festive season.

In a remarkable initiative, Iwobi launched a pop-up shop named ‘Alexpress,’ where families facing financial hardship can collect free food, drinks, household items, and even a Christmas turkey. The project is a testament to Iwobi’s desire to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate.

Speaking to BBC Africa, Iwobi shared the motivation behind the initiative: “We like to do something every Christmas to try and give back. This year, we’re creating my own ‘Alexpress,’ a little minimart to try and give out food to families that may not be able to get food for Christmas.”

He continued, “If I can help them celebrate a great Christmas, why not? My parents have always given back, and seeing them do that has inspired me. When I got into the position I’m in today, I knew I would always try to give back and help those who are less fortunate.”

On the pitch, Iwobi has been a standout performer for Fulham under manager Marco Silva, scoring 10 league goals since the start of last season. However, his focus this week has shifted from football to charity, as he continues to make a positive impact off the field.

Fulham will be back in action on Boxing Day when they face Chelsea, with both teams coming off goalless draws in their previous matches. Iwobi’s teammate, teenage midfielder Josh King, made his first Premier League start in Fulham’s draw with Southampton on Sunday and could feature again due to injuries to Sander Berge and Sasa Lukic. Silva praised King’s performance, calling it an important moment in the youngster’s career.

As for the injuries to Berge and Lukic, Silva added, “Not good signs for Sander and Sasa. Lukic was out for a long time with his shoulder, and he felt something in the final minutes.”

Iwobi’s charitable work this Christmas has been a shining example of how athletes can use their platform to make a meaningful difference in their communities.
