Pep Guardiola has agreed to a one-year contract extension with Manchester City, keeping him at the helm of the Premier League champions until the summer of 2026.
This new deal comes as a significant boost for City, following a period of uncertainty after their 2-1 FA Cup final defeat to Manchester United in May. Guardiola took some time over the summer to reflect on his future, with reports indicating he was considering his next move during the winter. However, the manager’s decision to commit to another year signals his continued desire to build on the success he has achieved at the club.
Guardiola signed his previous contract renewals in November while traveling to Abu Dhabi, the home country of City’s owner Sheikh Mansour. Before the international break, Guardiola was asked about the possibility of another trip to Abu Dhabi for talks, to which he responded: “No. I said many times, I won’t talk about it [a new contract]. When it happens, it will happen. We’re in touch regularly.”
Despite City’s recent struggles—having lost their last four matches, the first time in his 15-year managerial career that Guardiola has experienced such a run—the decision to extend his stay reflects his unwavering commitment to the club. Currently second in the Premier League with 23 points from 11 matches, Guardiola’s side is five points behind leaders Liverpool.
City are also facing an independent commission regarding more than 100 charges of alleged financial misconduct brought against them by the Premier League, a case they vehemently deny. Guardiola’s contract extension suggests he is not deterred by these challenges and remains motivated to continue his successful reign at the club.
Guardiola, who joined Manchester City in the summer of 2016, is already the most successful manager in the club’s history. Under his guidance, City has won six Premier League titles, including a record four consecutive titles. He also led them to their first-ever Champions League trophy in 2023, along with two FA Cups and four League Cups.
Guardiola’s extension also comes despite the upcoming departure of Txiki Begiristain, City’s director of football and a former Barcelona teammate of Guardiola. Begiristain will succeed Hugo Viana, who is currently the director of football at Sporting Lisbon.
Looking ahead, Guardiola will be hoping to end City’s four-game losing streak when they host Tottenham Hotspur at the Etihad Stadium this Saturday at 5:30 pm. Reflecting on the recent defeats, Guardiola stated after their 4-1 loss to Sporting in the Champions League: “It will be a tough season — we knew that from the start. But this is what it is. I like it, I love it, I want to face it and lift my players and try it.”
