Premier League fans will now get an earlier glimpse of their team’s starting line-up due to the introduction of a new rule change.
Previously, it was standard for clubs to release their matchday squads just an hour before kick-off. However, the Premier League has now altered this tradition, allowing teams to publish their starting XI and substitutes 75 minutes before the game begins, giving fans a sneak peek a full 15 minutes earlier than before.
While clubs have typically submitted their official team sheets to the Premier League well before kick-off. They were bound by an embargo that restricted them from announcing the news until 60 minutes prior to the match. The new rule, which aligns the Premier League with UEFA’s existing 75-minute rule. Means that teams like Manchester United, Arsenal. And Liverpool will now have to reveal their line-ups earlier, potentially affecting last-minute tactical decisions by managers.
For example, clubs playing at 3pm on a Saturday will now have to publish their team sheets by 1:45pm. This earlier release could give opponents more time to strategize based on the line-up, something managers traditionally tried to avoid.
The Premier League’s updated handbook outlines the requirements for matchday preparations, stating that all squads must submit their line-ups “at least 75 minutes before the time fixed for the kick-off of a league match.” This change not only affects teams but also has implications for fantasy football players. Who previously had to finalize their squads based on the hour-before deadline.
This shift brings the Premier League in line with European competitions, where the 75-minute rule has long been standard practice. For example, Real Madrid has often released their line-ups early. Sometimes even two hours before high-profile matches, such as last season’s Champions League final.
The new rule will take effect from the opening weekend of the Premier League season, starting with Manchester United’s match against Fulham at Old Trafford on Friday.
