Michael Owen has come under fire after naming Jordan Pickford as his top goalkeeper in the Premier League for the 2024 season so far, despite Everton’s ongoing relegation battle.
In a bold selection, Owen included Pickford in his Team of the Season, praising the Everton goalkeeper for his seven clean sheets – the second most in the league, behind only Nottingham Forest’s Matz Sels. However, the inclusion of Pickford has raised eyebrows, with many questioning the choice given Everton’s struggles this season.
While the rest of Owen’s picks are players from teams in the top half of the table, Pickford’s selection has led to widespread mockery online. One user wrote: “Have you had your eyes open for this season?” Another supporter remarked, “Pickford over Raya? What’s your reasoning? He highlighted Nottingham Forest as his surprise of the season, noting their impressive position in the top half, and selected Amad Diallo’s late winner in the Manchester derby as the moment of the season.
The former Liverpool striker’s bold predictions continue to spark debate, particularly after he controversially suggested that Manchester City would struggle to make the top four this season, despite their status as defending champions. Following a tweet quoting his early-season prediction, Owen responded with an upside-down smiley face emoji, signaling his confidence in his opinions.
