Jurgen Klopp, the former Liverpool manager, has been appointed as the global head of football for Red Bull. Marking his first role since leaving the Premier League club earlier this year. Red Bull, which owns several football clubs worldwide, including RB Leipzig, made the announcement on Wednesday. Klopp will officially take up the position on January 1, 2025.
After a celebrated nine-year tenure at Liverpool, Klopp expressed excitement about this new chapter. “After almost 25 years on the sideline, I could not be more excited to get involved in a project like this,” Klopp said in a statement. “The role may have changed, but my passion for football and the people who make the game what it is has not.”
Klopp has marked his legacy at Liverpool with numerous triumphs. Since joining in October 2015, he guided the club to its first Premier League title in 30 years, a Champions League trophy, and victories in the Club World Cup, FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Super Cup, and Community Shield. Before his time at Liverpool, Klopp also achieved notable success with Borussia Dortmund, winning two Bundesliga titles, a German Cup, and leading the team to the 2013 Champions League final.
In his new role, Klopp will not manage the day-to-day operations of Red Bull’s clubs, which span Germany, the United States, Brazil, and Austria. Instead, he will offer strategic oversight and mentorship to the sporting directors and coaches within the organization. Red Bull emphasized that Klopp will play a key part in shaping the overall football philosophy across its clubs.
“He will provide strategic vision, supporting individual sporting directors in advancing the Red Bull philosophy,” the company said. Klopp will also take part in global scouting and actively contribute to training and developing coaches.
Klopp sees this role as a unique opportunity to make an impact beyond the traditional coaching role. “I see my role primarily as a mentor for the coaches and management of the Red Bull clubs, but ultimately, I am one part of an organization that is unique, innovative, and forward-looking,” he said.
Some German media have reported that Klopp’s contract with Red Bull includes an exit clause that could allow him to take on the role of Germany’s national team coach in the future. This speculation comes amid a challenging period for German football, as the national team has struggled to regain its dominance on the international stage in recent years.
For now, Klopp’s appointment at Red Bull signals a shift in his football career, from the dugout to a broader leadership role, where he will have the opportunity to shape the future of multiple clubs within the global football landscape.
