Bukayo Saka’s injury setback has cast doubt on Arsenal’s Premier League title ambitions, with pundits Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer expressing concerns over the winger’s lengthy absence. Saka, 23, is expected to miss over two months following hamstring surgery, a timeline that both experts believe could hinder Arsenal’s chances of closing the gap on league leaders Liverpool.
Currently six points adrift of the top spot, Arsenal face a challenging stretch without their star player. Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Micah Richards highlighted Saka’s critical role in Mikel Arteta’s system. “We talked about key players at the start of the season. Losing Saka, for a month or two, is huge. If Arsenal had a fully fit squad, I’d agree it’s not over yet, but Saka is just too important for this team.”
Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer echoed Richards’ sentiments, with Lineker emphasizing the challenges of recovering from surgery. “If you have an operation, you don’t come back in a month. Especially not with a hamstring injury,” said Lineker, adding his best wishes for Saka’s recovery. Shearer, reflecting on his own experience with long-term injuries, agreed, noting the potential impact on Saka’s explosiveness and form.

Despite the setback, Arsenal have shown resilience, winning their last two matches against Ipswich and Brentford. Leandro Trossard and rising talent Ethan Nwaneri have stepped in to fill the void, while speculation grows over whether Arteta will seek reinforcements in the January transfer window. However, the Gunners face a daunting schedule with five high-stakes matches over 15 days, including clashes against Newcastle, Manchester United, Tottenham, and Manchester City—all without Saka.
While Richards and Lineker predict Arsenal will secure another second-place finish, the team’s ability to navigate this crucial period without their talisman will determine if they can sustain their title challenge.
