Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has requested the construction of a £200,000 privacy wall at the club’s Carrington training ground to shield training sessions from prying eyes. This demand comes as the Red Devils undergo significant renovations at their facilities, part of a £50 million upgrade aimed at ensuring their training amenities meet the standards of elite teams in the Premier League.
The current modifications to Carrington have made training sessions somewhat exposed, prompting Ten Hag to advocate for a giant white wall that would not only enhance privacy but also provide protection from the weather. This request has garnered approval from INEOS executives and senior officials at the club, marking a significant step toward restoring the level of privacy players previously enjoyed at their former training pitch.
However, the decision to allocate funds for the wall has sparked frustration among some staff members at Manchester United. The club has implemented stringent cost-cutting measures, resulting in the loss of 250 jobs as part of a major restructuring. Many employees have expressed concerns about the necessity of the wall, particularly given the recent revocation of traditional perks for staff during the FA Cup final by new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

This situation echoes past instances at the club, such as when former manager Louis van Gaal infamously ordered the installation of windbreakers at Carrington to shield players from the elements, declaring that “wind is not always the friend of the players.”
As the club invests heavily in enhancing its training facilities, the commitment to providing top-notch amenities for players and coaching staff is evident. However, this dedication comes amid ongoing uncertainty regarding Ten Hag’s future at the helm. A meeting in London earlier this week addressed the manager’s position, but no definitive decision has been made public. With United languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League following their worst start to a season, Ten Hag insists he retains the support of the club’s hierarchy as they navigate this challenging period.
