Chelsea Not Ready for Title Push, But Future Dominance is Possible, Says Maresca

Despite Chelsea’s impressive 3-0 victory over Aston Villa on Sunday, which lifted them to third in the Premier League table, manager Enzo Maresca has downplayed the team’s chances of competing for the title this season. The Blues are level on points and goal difference with Arsenal, but still trail leaders Liverpool by nine points.

Chelsea’s strong performance at home propelled them past struggling champions Manchester City, but Maresca remains cautious about their title aspirations, citing the team’s youth and inexperience. The club has invested heavily under Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital’s ownership, spending over £1.5 billion on new signings in recent windows. The squad, filled with emerging talent such as Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo, and Nicolas Jackson, has shown great promise, while Cole Palmer continues to shine.

However, Maresca believes that the youthful average age of the squad—just over 23—will prevent them from contending for major honors this season. “We’re not in the title race, in my opinion,” he said.

Looking ahead, Maresca remains optimistic about Chelsea’s long-term potential, explaining that while they may not be title contenders this season, the foundation is being laid for future success. “For me, Chelsea in the next five to 10 years will be one of the teams, or the team, that is going to dominate English football,” he said, emphasizing that his focus is on building something sustainable for the future rather than short-term targets.

While Chelsea’s ownership has set no immediate goals for Maresca, their long-term vision for the club remains clear. Chelsea finished 12th and 6th in the Premier League in the first two seasons under the new ownership, but Maresca’s leadership has begun to stabilize the team.

In a more urgent update, Maresca confirmed that Wesley Fofana will be out for “weeks” with a hamstring injury, joining captain Reece James on the injury list.
