Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca acknowledged that his side should not entertain thoughts of a Premier League title challenge after a stunning 2-0 defeat to Ipswich Town at Portman Road on Monday. Liam Delap’s early penalty and a second-half goal from former Chelsea player Omari Hutchinson undid the Blues, who suffered their second consecutive loss following a Boxing Day defeat to Fulham.
Despite a promising eight-match winning streak, Chelsea’s recent form has seen them drop to fourth place, now 10 points adrift of leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand. Enzo Maresca, who had previously tempered expectations about his squad’s title aspirations, reaffirmed his belief that Chelsea’s young team is not yet ready to compete for the top spot.
“We are not focused on the title race,” Maresca said. “It’s a long race, and we focus on each game as it comes. No one expected us to be where we are at this point in the season.”
Ipswich, meanwhile, celebrated their first Premier League home win in 22 years, climbing to within a point of safety. Kieran McKenna, the Ipswich manager, expressed his joy, saying, “It’s a special night for the club. To beat Chelsea at home is fantastic.”

The match saw Ipswich take the lead in the 12th minute when Delap converted a penalty after a slight challenge from Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen. Despite Chelsea’s numerous chances, including a disallowed goal and a stunning save by Ipswich goalkeeper Christian Walton, they could not find an equalizer.
Ipswich doubled their advantage in the 53rd minute when Hutchinson finished off a counterattack, capitalizing on a poor pass from Chelsea’s Axel Disasi. The goal, against his former club, added a layer of personal significance for Hutchinson.
Chelsea’s inability to convert opportunities and Ipswich’s resilience ensured a memorable victory for the home side, leaving Maresca with much to reflect on as Chelsea’s title hopes slip further away.
