The referee sent off Southampton’s captain, Jack Stephens, in the first half for a bizarre hair-pulling incident involving Marc Cucurella, as Chelsea cruised to a 5-1 victory at St. Mary’s Stadium in the Premier League.
The referee dismissed Stephens in the 39th minute after he tugged on Cucurella’s hair, a moment of madness that left Southampton, already trailing 3-1, with 10 men. The match had already taken a sharp turn in Chelsea’s favor, with goals from Christopher Nkunku, Noni Madueke, and Axel Disasi putting the visitors in control.
Southampton had briefly equalized through Joe Aribo, who swept home an 11th-minute goal following Disasi’s opener. However, Chelsea regained the lead when Madueke intercepted a poor pass from Southampton goalkeeper Joe Lumley, setting up Nkunku to score into an empty net.
Madueke, who had a standout performance, then doubled Chelsea’s lead in the 34th minute with a brilliant curling shot into the bottom corner, following a dribble inside from the left. The game was already looking bleak for Southampton, and the situation worsened when Stephens was sent off for his reckless actions on Cucurella.
Despite being a man down, Southampton’s defense struggled to cope with Chelsea’s attacking dominance. Chelsea could have extended their lead further, hitting the woodwork three times, with Cole Palmer, Tosin Adarabioyo, and Madueke all unlucky not to score.
In the second half, Palmer sealed the win for Chelsea, scoring his ninth goal of the season in the 76th minute after a strong run and assist from Nkunku. Jadon Sancho added a fifth three minutes from time, compounding Southampton’s misery.
Chelsea, who extended their unbeaten run to six Premier League matches, were clinical in their dominance, while Southampton remain rooted to the bottom of the league, suffering another heavy defeat.
