Pep Guardiola Reveals Man City’s Fate on 115 Financial Charges is Imminent – and Vows to Speak His Mind

Manchester, UK – Manchester City will learn the verdict of their hearing on 115 alleged Premier League financial breaches in just one month, according to manager Pep Guardiola, who did not hold back his frustration over the decision and its potential impact on the club.

Countdown to the Verdict

City, reigning four-time Premier League champions, have vehemently denied the charges leveled against them during a hearing held between September and December last year. The independent commission reviewing the case holds unlimited powers and could impose severe sanctions—including massive fines or points deductions—if the club is found guilty. While officials initially expected the outcome in the first quarter of 2025, Guardiola confirmed that they will announce the final decision in a few weeks.

Reaction Amidst a Pricey January Transfer Window

The announcement came amid growing speculation about City’s January transfer window, during which the club spent a staggering £180 million. When questioned whether the heavy spending was influenced by the looming possibility of a future transfer ban, Guardiola responded:

“In one month, I think there will be a verdict and a sentence. After that, we will see my opinion of what happened so far.”

During the window, City signed four players—defenders Abdoukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis, forward Omar Marmoush, and midfielder Nico Gonzalez—in an effort to reverse a slump that had jeopardized their title aspirations. Guardiola defended the aggressive approach, insisting it was a necessary reaction to previous struggles rather than a strategy dictated by the charges. He attributed the club’s ability to invest heavily to profitable sales of homegrown talents such as Cole Palmer and Liam Delap in recent years.

Guardiola’s Candid Take on Club Spending

Guardiola was blunt in his remarks on Manchester City’s spending habits:

“My words will not convince people. I know with this club it is always ‘just about the money’. But in the past five years, we are the last among the top six for net spend. Even after what we have spent in this transfer window, we are away from Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham, and even Liverpool. The only reason is that we sell a lot in the last seasons.”

Ongoing Legal Battles and Sponsorship Row

City’s challenges extend beyond financial charges. The club’s ongoing dispute with Premier League authorities has intensified following a recent legal challenge over what they describe as ‘unlawful’ sponsorship rules. In November last year, the majority of top-flight clubs voted in favor of new Associated Party Transaction (APT) rules, designed to curb excessive financial inflows from related companies. Although an independent tribunal previously ruled the existing rules unlawful, Manchester City contended that the league rushed through the changes to appease rival clubs.

A report from The Times now indicates that City’s legal team has requested another arbitration on the matter after only receiving backing from three other Premier League clubs in the vote.

What’s Next?

As Manchester City brace for potential sanctions and navigate a turbulent off-field legal battle, Pep Guardiola remains focused on the team’s performance on the pitch. The verdict on the 115 charges will shape City’s near-term future, and Guardiola promises to voice his stance once officials announce the decision.

For now, the coming weeks will be critical as City waits for both the financial hearing’s outcome and further developments in their sponsorship dispute—issues that could have long-lasting effects on the club’s fortunes in the Premier League.
