Oleksandr Zinchenko, the 27-year-old defender for Arsenal, has expressed his willingness to temporarily halt his football career in the UK and defend his homeland of Ukraine if called upon.
Zinchenko, who has already contributed £1 million to Ukraine’s war effort following the 2022 Russian invasion, revealed that his former school friends have enlisted to fight in the conflict. In a BBC interview, he affirmed his commitment to his country, stating, “I think it’s a clear answer. I would go.”
Reflecting on the stark reality of the situation, Zinchenko expressed disbelief at the transformation of his peers from childhood friends to defenders of their nation. He acknowledged the gravity of the circumstances, emphasizing the importance of not giving up in the face of adversity.
His remarks come at a time when Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for the mobilization of an additional half a million soldiers to sustain the war effort.

Despite his allegiance to Ukraine, Zinchenko’s professional career has taken him abroad, notably joining Arsenal from Manchester City in a £30 million transfer in 2022. He had previously played for Russian club Ufa before his tenure with Manchester City. Zinchenko admitted that he no longer communicates with his Russian former teammates. However, he expressed empathy for their predicament, acknowledging the challenging position they find themselves in.
In response to the Russian invasion, Zinchenko stressed the importance of remembering the actions perpetrated against Ukraine and passing down this knowledge to future generations.
In light of escalating tensions, President Zelensky recently signed a new law reducing the military draft age from 27 to 25. Under martial law, authorities prohibit men between the ages of 18 and 60 from leaving Ukraine unless they are deemed unfit for military service. This has resulted in many families experiencing separation as wives and children seek refuge abroad while their male relatives remain to fulfill their military duties.
Zinchenko’s unwavering commitment to Ukraine amidst the ongoing conflict underscores the gravity of the situation and the profound impact it has had on individuals and families across the nation.
