Norwich City has made the decision to sack manager David Wagner following their disappointing play-off loss against Leeds.
After a goalless draw in the first leg, Norwich suffered a devastating 4-0 defeat at Elland Road, leaving them facing another season in the Championship.
Wagner had joined Norwich midway through the 2022/23 season but failed to win over the supporters, with criticism directed towards his perceived negative style of football. The team finished 13th that season, their lowest position in five years, and optimism was not high at the start of the current campaign.
Despite initial doubts, Wagner led Norwich to a sixth-place finish, securing a spot in the play-offs. However, they delivered a lackluster performance in the first leg, and they suffered a convincing defeat in the second leg.
Following the defeat at Leeds, Wagner expressed his disappointment, acknowledging the team’s poor performance and their inability to compete effectively. He highlighted defensive lapses and a failure to capitalize on scoring opportunities as key factors in the defeat.
Reports suggest that the Liverpool hierarchy is considering former Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper and Arsenal assistant boss Carlos Cuesta as potential replacements for Wagner.
On the player front, Norwich is expected to undergo significant changes in the summer, with a potential overhaul of key players as they prepare for a season without parachute payments.
