Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has reportedly taken a hands-on approach in the club’s pursuit of Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino. Aiming to fend off competition from Barcelona.
The Gunners are looking to strengthen their midfield following Mohamed Elneny’s departure at the end of his contract and ongoing uncertainties regarding Thomas Partey’s future. With the summer transfer window opening on June-14, Arteta and sporting director Edu are keen to secure new signings swiftly.
Merino, along with his teammate Martin Zubimendi, has emerged as a top target for Arsenal. Merino’s contract with Real Sociedad is set to expire in a year, making a summer transfer highly likely. Reports from Spain suggest that Merino is unwilling to renew his contract, with a transfer fee of around €25 million (£21m) being suggested. Both Arsenal and Barcelona are leading the race for his signature.
Currently on international duty with Spain at Euro-2024, where he recently played in a 1-0 win over Albania alongside Zubimendi. Merino’s negotiations might be more challenging. However, Catalan outlet Sport reports that Arteta has personally called the 28-year-old midfielder to present his vision and plans for him at Arsenal.
Merino had an impressive season at Real Sociedad, scoring eight goals and providing five assists in 45-appearances across all competitions. Having already accumulated 24 caps for Spain, Merino is familiar with English football. Having played for Newcastle during the 2017/18 season.
Arteta’s connection to Real Sociedad, where he played during his career, and the presence of former Sociedad star and current Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard, could play a crucial role in convincing Merino to choose Arsenal over Barcelona. Zubimendi, who has also been linked with Arsenal and Bayern Munich, appears less likely to leave Sociedad. The 25-year-old, under contract until June 2027, has expressed contentment with his current club. Especially after securing a Europa League spot by finishing sixth in La Liga.
When asked about his future, Zubimendi commented, “I feel very loved, by the people I love and, for the moment, I see [a move] far away. At first [the transfer speculation] bothered me, but now I understand how football, markets, and journalism work. I have to accept it and that’s it.”
Arsenal fans will be keenly watching as Arteta continues his efforts to bring Merino to North London. Aiming to bolster the squad ahead of the new season.
