Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino expressed his genuine happiness at seeing Dele Alli after the former Tottenham midfielder made an appearance on Monday Night Football.
Dele, now with Everton, took to the studio to provide analysis of Everton’s match against Chelsea as he continues to recover from an injury that has sidelined him for the entire season. His last competitive appearance was for Besiktas in February 2023, and he has faced challenges with hip and groin injuries.
This marked Dele’s first media appearance since his poignant interview with Gary Neville on the Overlap last year, where he candidly discussed his childhood experiences, the pressures of professional football, and his mental health struggles, leaving Neville emotional.
During his appearance on Monday Night Football alongside Jamie Carragher and David Jones, Dele had a touching reunion with Pochettino in a pre-match interview. Pochettino showed his joy as he connected with Dele via studio link, reminiscing about their successful four-year stint together at Spurs.
“Good evening, this is new for me. I watched your interview earlier in my manager’s room,” Pochettino said on Sky Sports. “I need to talk now, I cannot see you but I want to say hello to Dele. What a player, oh my goodness, oh my goodness. It’s good to see you there, and I am happy to see you.”

Despite not playing competitively for 14 months, Dele expressed his excitement about returning to football. His journey back to fitness hasn’t been easy, but he remains determined to showcase his abilities on the pitch.
“I’m doing well. When I did the interview, I said it’s the best I’ve felt, at that time. Coming out of rehab and getting ready to be back playing. It’s been tough, but it’s a journey that I’m on, and I’m enjoying it and I’m ready to get back now,” Dele shared.
Reflecting on his injury, Dele emphasized the importance of patience and self-discovery. “I’ve had to be patient and really learn what patience is. It’s been a long journey with the injury. A lot of ups and downs, and it’s helped me grow as a person.” He said, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to understand himself better.
As he nears his return to the pitch, Dele looks forward to using his injury experience as motivation. “I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, and I’m excited,” he concluded.
