Mark Lawrenson believes Liverpool may opt against pursuing Roberto De Zerbi as a potential replacement for Jurgen Klopp due to uncertainty surrounding the Brighton manager’s contract talks.
Following Xabi Alonso’s decision to remain at Bayer Leverkusen, De Zerbi emerged as a frontrunner to succeed Klopp at Liverpool. However, recent reports indicate that the Italian manager may no longer be under consideration by the Reds.
Lawrenson speculated that De Zerbi’s comments about wanting more control over transfers and his ambiguous stance on his Brighton future might have deterred Liverpool from pursuing him further.

“I don’t think Liverpool will go anywhere near him,” Lawrenson told Paddy Power. “He’s a good manager, but I think he is getting carried away – Brighton haven’t had a particularly good season.”
Lawrenson suggested that De Zerbi’s remarks about needing more players and potential discussions with other clubs could have raised concerns among Liverpool’s hierarchy. Additionally, De Zerbi’s reluctance to commit to a new contract with Brighton until. He understands the club’s long-term vision may have further complicated matters.
“Brighton are a well-run club – they’ll just get another manager in, and being run the way that they are. They probably know who their next manager is,” Lawrenson added.
De Zerbi’s recent statements indicate that he is seeking clarity on Brighton’s future plans before making a decision about his own. His desire to align his vision with the club’s direction suggests. A potential stumbling block in negotiations with Liverpool or any other interested parties.
