Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez have achieved a remarkable feat in Major League Soccer (MLS). Matching the record set by David Beckham and Landon Donovan.
Beckham and Donovan made history in 2008 by each winning the MLS Player of the Matchday award twice within the first 11 games of the season. Now, Messi and Suarez have equaled this accomplishment in the current campaign.
Their latest victory came after an impressive performance against the New England Revolution. Where Messi scored two goals and provided an assist in a 4-1 win. This marked Messi’s second Player of the Matchday award this season, joining Suarez, who had already received the honor twice.
The duo has been instrumental for Inter Miami, with Messi tallying nine goals and four assists, and Suarez contributing seven goals and four assists. Their stellar performances have propelled Miami to the top of the Eastern Conference standings.

Joining forces with former Barcelona teammates Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, as well as manager Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino. Messi and Suarez have elevated Miami’s prospects for success. Following their Leagues Cup triumph last year, Miami is now considered one of the favorites to clinch the MLS trophy.
In addition to matching Beckham and Donovan’s record, Messi has set a new milestone by becoming the first MLS player to achieve five consecutive games with multiple goal contributions. Leading both the goals and assists charts in the first 11 games of the 2024 season. Messi’s impact on the league has been undeniable since his arrival.
Reflecting on their journey, Miami head coach Martino acknowledged the excitement surrounding Messi’s presence but emphasized the team’s focus on winning. With tough matches ahead, including a showdown against the New York Red Bulls. Miami is poised to continue their quest for MLS glory.
