While Lionel Messi clinched a record-breaking eighth Ballon d’Or last year, attributed to his World Cup triumph, contributions to Paris Saint-Germain’s title, and notable impact in Major League Soccer with Inter Miami, Ronaldo secured the last of his five Ballon d’Ors in 2017. However, neither of them retains any of their accolades in their personal trophy cabinets.
Messi’s eight Ballon d’Or trophies are displayed in Barcelona’s Camp Nou museum, symbolizing gratitude for the club’s role. In contrast, four of Ronaldo’s five Ballon d’Ors are on display in his personal museum on the Portuguese island of Madeira.
Ronaldo’s decision to donate his 2013 Ballon d’Or to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, an organization granting wishes to children facing life-threatening or life-limiting illnesses, further showcases his charitable nature. At an auction in London in 2017, Idan Ofer, a prominent Israeli businessman and Atletico Madrid co-owner, acquired the trophy for £513,000.
Despite their illustrious careers and numerous accolades, both Messi and Ronaldo have transitioned to new footballing landscapes, with Messi now plying his trade in the United States and Ronaldo in Saudi Arabia. As they enter the twilight of their careers, it seems improbable that either will claim another Ballon d’Or title.
