Leicester City has disclosed a substantial financial deficit of £89.7 million for the 2022/23 season, a revelation that follows their recent referral to an independent commission by the Premier League for alleged breaches of financial regulations.
The club’s financial woes have escalated, with their total losses over the past three Premier League seasons surpassing £215 million, more than twice the £105 million limit imposed by top-flight regulations.
Despite Leicester’s lucrative player sales, including Wesley Fofana to Chelsea for £70 million, James Maddison to Tottenham for £40 million, and Harvey Barnes to Newcastle for £39 million, their financial difficulties persist. However, the dismissal of manager Brendan Rodgers and his coaching staff in April 2023, coupled with the club’s relegation to the Championship, offset these sales.
Chief Executive Susan Whelan expressed disappointment at the club’s unexpected downturn, describing it as a setback that will have lasting repercussions. She emphasized the need for Leicester to focus on rebuilding and returning to the Premier League.
Amid the financial turmoil, Leicester faces potential sanctions, including a points deduction, if found guilty of breaching profit and sustainability rules. The club’s case is expected to extend beyond the current season, with any penalties likely to impact their campaign in the Championship next season.
Leicester, currently vying for promotion back to the Premier League, remains competitive in the Championship, sitting third in the standings with a game in hand on the top two teams. Despite recent setbacks, their victory over Norwich City provides hope for a swift return to the top flight.
