First FA Cup Win for Aston Villa Since 2016 Sealed by Deflected Goal

Aston Villa finally broke their FA Cup jinx, securing a triumph over Middlesbrough with an 87th-minute deflected goal from Matty Cash, marking their first FA Cup victory since 2016.
Middlesbrough, a Championship side, seemed set for a replay until Cash’s long-range attempt took a fortuitous deflection, deceiving keeper Tom Glover and handing Villa the win.
Despite the Premier League visitors dominating, Glover made several crucial saves, denying attempts from Jhon Duran and John McGinn. Villa’s frustration peaked when Ezri Konsa’s header hit the post before Cash’s late heroics secured their advancement.
Villa, seven-time FA Cup winners, ended an eight-match losing streak in the competition, having faced upset defeats in previous years against lower-league teams like Peterborough in 2018 and Stevenage in 2023.
Manager Unai Emery expressed the significance of the FA Cup, acknowledging Villa’s limited success in the tournament and their ambition to progress further.
Middlesbrough, despite a commendable Carabao Cup run, only managed one shot on target, thwarted by Villa’s goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.
Villa, positioned second in the Premier League, argued for a penalty after a challenge on Alex Moreno but received no VAR intervention due to the absence of the technology in non-Premier League venues.
In the absence of a potential replay, Cash’s goal, assisted by substitute Douglas Luiz, secured Villa’s victory, ending their FA Cup drought and setting the stage for the upcoming fourth-round draw.
Villa’s relief was palpable at the final whistle, providing their fervent fans with a long-awaited win in the prestigious competition, highlighting their anticipation for the next round.
