Jurgen Klopp Backs Nuri Sahin to Succeed as Borussia Dortmund Head Coach

Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has expressed strong support for Nuri Sahin, the newly appointed head coach of Borussia Dortmund. Klopp, who managed Dortmund from 2008 to 2015, believes Sahin will excel in his new role despite his young age of 35.

Sahin, a former Dortmund player, enjoyed significant success under Klopp’s management. Including winning the Bundesliga in the 2010/2011 season and being named Bundesliga Player of the Season. Klopp is confident that Sahin’s experience as player and his recent coaching stints have prepared him well for the challenge.

“At 35, Nuri is a very young coach, but so was I,” Klopp said via Bild. “I definitely believe that after his outstanding career as a player, he will also become a super coach. Of course, I wish him the greatest success at BVB.”

Sahin takes over from Edin Terzic, who led Dortmund to a fifth-place finish in the Bundesliga and a Champions League final appearance, where they lost to Real Madrid. Sahin, who also had spells at Real Madrid and Liverpool, returned to Dortmund in January as an assistant coach. His deep connection with Dortmund, where he made 274 appearances, and his successful transition into coaching with Turkish side Antalyaspor, make him a promising choice for the head coach position.

Klopp’s belief in Sahin’s potential is rooted in their strong relationship during their time together at Dortmund. Sahin has often praised Klopp for his human touch and coaching abilities. “There is no doubt about his coaching — he is very good,” Sahin said in a 2021 interview with Goal. “But what I love most about him is that he’s human. He touches you on a human level… This is what I loved about him and what I learned from him.”

Sahin’s coaching career began at Antalyaspor, where he led the team to an undefeated streak and secured their top-flight status, ultimately finishing seventh in the table. His success in Turkey earned him a place as Terzic’s assistant at Dortmund. And now he steps into the head coach role with high expectations.

Meanwhile, Liverpool fans are adjusting to their new head coach, Arne Slot, who took over in June. Klopp reassured Reds fans about the future of the club, saying, “The club is in good hands. People might worry about the future but I’m not.”

As Sahin embarks on this new chapter at Dortmund, both Klopp and the football community will be watching with keen interest, hopeful that he can replicate his success as a player in his new coaching role.
